About Online Learning

If you want to know, what was the first online degree program or to find out how distance education has changed in the last decade, there's a wealth of available information on this subject.

What is online learning? If you are looking for the definition of online learning, online learning is defined as any course that's taught via the Internet. If you need to understand what is meant by online learning, there are many different types of programs but the common denominator is that all classes are taught to you via your computer. You don't have to attend classes and you can even write your final examinations (in many cases) via the Internet as well.

Self paced learning has been happening for many years via correspondence programs. Today, the Internet has replaced that popular method for learning and has gotten so popular that the numbers of individuals enrolling in online programs increases every year.

Many traditional campus program schools now offer online learning as well as local campus based classroom training programs to enable them to reach a greater student body. Sometimes, online schools extend their reach to international students as well in online education. What is distance learning to you? Whether you want to earn at your own pace without restrictions or schedules or want to work closely with an instructor and collaborate with classmates, you can likely find a course suited to your needs.

What is the value of an online degree? In the definition of online learning, the degree itself can be as valuable as a degree that you earn in a classroom. Today, online learning is not at all inferior to a bricks and mortar classroom. Virtual classrooms can be just as effective in teaching principles as their non-virtual counterparts and many schools even offer a combination of online and classroom-based training.

When choosing an online program, look for local accreditation and when you are going into a specific market, if there's a trade organization, check with them to see what their opinion of a particular program is. It's very prudent to look for accreditation up front to be sure that you will receive a diploma, certification or degree that you can actually use in real life.

What is wrong with online learning? Many people who are successful at online learning claim the only problem is that you need motivation. If a person is unmotivated, they will not succeed. Because it can be isolating, without a physical classroom, classmates and a teacher in person, it can be hard to motivate yourself. The answer to this, if you are the type of person who needs motivators is to join a highly interactive course that keeps you engaged and interested.
